Comprehensive Health Testing for Yorkshire Terriers: EMBARK & OFA Certifications
At Essence Of Grace Yorkies, we prioritize the health and well-being of our Yorkshire Terriers through rigorous health testing. We perform comprehensive genetic testing on all our puppies and breeding prospects using EMBARK, ensuring they are clear of over 200 genetic health risks specific to Yorkshire Terriers. Our genetic testing includes screening for coat color, trait genetics, breed-specific risks, and overall genetic diversity to uphold the integrity of the Yorkshire Terrier breed standard.
Before any adult Yorkshire Terrier is considered for breeding, they undergo thorough health evaluations, including:
OFA Eye Certification (Canine Eye Registration Foundation - CAER): Each adult dog is examined by a certified veterinary ophthalmologist and registered with the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA). This certification helps detect and prevent hereditary eye diseases, ensuring that only dogs with healthy eyes are included in our breeding program.
Patellar Luxation Evaluation: We perform OFA Patellar Luxation testing to assess the stability and positioning of the kneecap (patella) in our adult dogs. This evaluation helps identify any signs of patellar luxation, a common orthopedic issue in small breeds, to ensure the long-term health and mobility of our breeding dogs.
By adhering to these stringent health testing protocols, we strive to produce Yorkshire Terriers that are not only visually stunning and breed standard-compliant but also genetically sound and healthy. Our goal is to provide families with Yorkshire Terrier companions that bring joy and love into their lives for years to come.
